Swimming in the Pensieve

I can say it correctly, but they’ll just screw it up anyway!

“Students must correctly answer roughly 55 percent of the math problems and 60 percent of the English questions to pass.” — [For 25% of LBUSD seniors, diplomas ride on exit exams 10/16/2005]

Twenty-five percent of the LBUSD high school seniors cannot pass what amounts to a middle school test of proficiency in math and English with at least an ‘F’ and a ‘D-’, respectively? This, of course, leaves us to wonder how many students just barely passed the test with an ‘F+’ and a ‘D’.

Interestingly enough, CAMS is sporting a 100% pass rate on both portions of the CAHSEE, with Lakewood coming in at a distant Math: 75%, ELA: 76% pass rate; with LBUSD, as a whole, lagging behind the statewide CAHSEE pass-rates.

While LBUSD claims increased academic performance on the part of the students as among the benefits of mandatory school uniforms, neither CAMS nor Lakewood is a mandatory school uniform campus.

LBUSD is certainly missing some key variables in the formula for providing a quality education to its students. As a first step in a positive direction, perhaps they could replace Chris Steinhauser with the principal of CAMS, Dr. Kathleen Clark. (more…)

CAliVA Increases Enrollments by Another Gabston-Howell

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD — Allan @ 21:29:06

This year has basically been one battle after another, and they just keep coming at us. Now, pretty much everyone in the house is either sick, or on their way to being sick, and we have the certifiable Bozos over at Millikan to deal with.

How is it that the state of education has sunk so low? (more…)

LBUSD Layoffs

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Civics — Allan @ 22:09:23

In a fit of administrative criminality and callous fiscal irresponsibility, LBUSD laid-off 12 workers while giving certain non-union represented managers, supervisors, and principals a total of $6.8 million in raises and bonuses over the next two years. (more…)

LBUSD White Lies

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Domesticity, Education — Allan @ 22:54:41

It’s time to set the story straight for those who depend too heavily on what the school district has to say to you.

Back on the 9th of this month, I noticed the following bit of Rah! Rah! text on the LBUSD website. (more…)

Uniformity

Only today did it occur to me that, at our last parent-teacher, face-to-face meeting, Lisa Watson–our assigned teacher for the girls–asked what size CAliVA polo shirts to order for the girls. She presented lucid safety reasons for the school-affiliated shirts to be worn at school outings and functions, but never asked us to pay for the shirts. (more…)

The Endless March of the Morons: Just Another Sunny Day in LBUSD

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Domesticity, Education — Allan @ 13:12:35

The lesson I was teaching my two youngest daughters, about RenĂ© Decartes, was interrupted by a phone call from Guillermo Jimenez, of Millikan High, at 12:03 this afternoon. Permit me to tell you what another one of LBUSD’s “good, little, policy-drones” has to say about the provisos and quid-pro-quos of a FAPE in LBUSD; while he waits for a pat on his head from the table scrap gods. English Teacher Lows at Millikan High

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Domesticity, Education — Allan @ 20:23:55

Ever wonder why LBUSD works the way it does (like a bunch of drunk idiots, out for a joyride in a stolen car)? Stop wondering and take a good look at this analogy to the LBUSD culture. Any system wherein idiots are rewarded functions in this very way, and LBUSD is certainly the best example of an idiot-rewarding system that I can think of. (more…)

Schools Lose Money - Tough Year

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Domesticity, Education, Civics — Allan @ 09:14:24

We just now saw an article written by Kevin Butler, of the Press Telegram, wherein he discussed a drop in LBUSD enrollment of 1122 students; that this translates into approximately 5.5 million dollars lost to the district (my figures are somewhat higher, BTW); the consequential cutbacks in manpower and service delivery by LBUSD; and how parents are now footing the bill to pay the salaries of certain LBUSD employees. The Run Aways!

Filed under: Long Beach Unified SD, Domesticity, Education — Allan @ 13:22:40

I had a chance to chat with some parents from Robinson Academy today, at which time some very interesting things were said. Apparently, we have been billed by the admin-types as having run away from LBUSD to “homeschool” our children. I suppose, given a very narrow definition of the facts, that could be held-forth as being a true statement.

However, a larger and more balanced perspective would articulate the facts as (more…)
