Guardians of Ga’Hoole, and Dead Computers

Filed under: Domesticity, Parenting, Education — Allan @ 18:16:09

Anya has been anticipating the arrival of the newest Guardians of Ga’Hoole book (Lasky, Kathryn. Guardians of Ga’Hoole: Book Eight - The Outcast. New York: Schoolastic, Inc., September 1, 2005.) in the same way she anticipates any forestalled opportunity for reading; almost a daily routine of jumping up and down in front of the mailbox. It finally arrived this afternoon.

It’s now sitting on Annie’s desk, waiting for Mommy to read; because Anya knocked-out the book in something like an hour.

Some things never end. She’s back to, “Hurry-up and wait!”

On another note: Lisa Watson, of CAliVA, rang us today to introduce herself as our area teacher; and mention that there’s an Ice Cream party for the CAliVA of Long Beach (& and vicinity) parents and students on the first of September. We plan on being there.

I did tentatively raise the issue of the belly-up computer, to which she tried to ask, “It didn’t…” but I interrupted her with, “Yeah, it’s dead.” She says that she’ll call the right folks (or was that the folks who administer the Last Rites?), and have it picked up. Another one might be along…? That’s a question I’ll bet she can’t answer; because, unless I miss my guess, the K12 computer supply pipeline is probably drying-up fairly fast.

I understand that these kinds of things happen all the time–particularly when you have a population of nomadic computers–and it has to be getting worse with the up-swing in new enrollees that CAliVA has had this year. I assured her that we can probably manage without the computer being one of their highest priorities at the moment. (Let’s just get these huge boxes out of my dining room, if you don’t mind.) Her relief-laced reaction to that gave me the impression that this has been a difficult season for all the CAliVA folks. (They probably have computers dropping like flies right now.)

Between you and me, I’m glad I don’t have to maintain a bunch of school computers, like I did back in the 90’s. It’s nothing less than a nightmare.

At any rate, the situation is being handled in a manner which I consider to be timely.
